Frequently asked questions
Everything about how MonthBox works, Premium and your privacy.
General
What is MonthBox?
MonthBox is a simple monthly budget planner for iPhone. Add your income, track bills and spending, check off bills as you pay them, and always see how much you have left this month.
Do I need to link my bank account?
No. MonthBox is manual by design: you add your income and expenses yourself. It never asks for your banking credentials and has no way to access your accounts.
Does it work offline?
Yes, completely. MonthBox doesn't need an internet connection – everything runs on your device.
Which devices does it run on?
MonthBox runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later. A Mac version isn't available yet.
Budgeting
What does “Left to spend” mean?
It's your income for the month minus what you've already paid. The dashboard also shows how much will be left once your pending bills are paid, so there are no surprises at the end of the month.
How do fixed monthly bills work?
Turn on Fixed Monthly Bill when you add an expense and pick its due day. The bill then appears in every new month as unpaid, with the same amount. Even if you don't open the app for a month, your bills carry over.
How does recurring income work?
Mark income as Recurring Monthly and it's added automatically each month, on the same day of the month.
What's the difference between paying, skipping and moving?
Swipe right to pay an expense – you can enter a different amount if the bill was higher or lower this month. Swipe left on a fixed bill to skip it for this month, or on a one-off expense to move it to the next month. Tap any row to edit it.
How do I add the home screen widget?
Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap + (or Edit → Add Widget), search for MonthBox and pick a size. It shows what's left to spend this month and updates as you pay bills.
Premium
Is MonthBox free?
Yes. The budget dashboard, income, bills and expenses, the home screen widget and your monthly history are free forever. Premium is optional.
What does Premium include?
Savings goals, a debt payoff planner, bill reminders and budget alerts, analytics and smart insights, custom categories with your own icons and colors, and CSV and PDF export.
How much does Premium cost?
$2.99 per month, $19.99 per year (save 44%) or $49.99 once for lifetime access. Prices are in US dollars – your local price is shown in the App Store before you buy.
How do savings goals and debts work with my budget?
Every goal and debt adds an entry to your monthly budget. Paying a debt payment counts one instalment and lowers the remaining balance; paying a goal contribution adds it to the goal. Marking it unpaid again reverses the change.
How do I cancel, or restore a purchase on a new device?
Cancel anytime in the Settings app → your name → Subscriptions. On a new device, open the Premium screen in MonthBox and tap Restore Purchases.
Privacy & Data
Where is my data stored?
Only on your device. MonthBox has no servers and no accounts, and it doesn't use analytics, ads or third-party SDKs. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Can I sync between my devices?
Not yet – syncing between devices is on the roadmap. Your MonthBox data is included in your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup, so it comes along when you set up a new iPhone from a backup.
Can I export my data?
Yes, with Premium: export a month or your complete history as CSV files for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, or create a PDF report for any month.
Troubleshooting
My fixed bills didn't show up in the new month
Make sure the expense has Fixed Monthly Bill turned on. Bills are copied from the most recent month you used. If you deleted a bill in a particular month, it stays deleted there.
I don't get bill reminders
Reminders are part of Premium. Check that Enable Notifications is on in MonthBox Settings, and that notifications for MonthBox are allowed in the iOS Settings app. Reminders arrive at 9:00 AM before each fixed bill's due day.
I deleted something by accident. Can I get it back?
Deleted items can't be recovered inside the app. Restoring an iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone brings back your data as it was when the backup was made.
Will you add bank linking?
No. MonthBox is intentionally manual and private – that's the whole point. We'd rather do one thing well: show you clearly where your month stands.
